Bangladesh protests cross-border violence as Rohingya conflict spills over; child injured amid escalating tensions
Bangladesh has strongly condemned cross-border firing from Myanmar and summoned the Myanmar ambassador following rising tensions along their shared border. The incident in Cox’s Bazar district left a 12-year-old Bangladeshi girl, Huzifa Afnan, seriously injured by gunfire. Additionally, a local fisherman lost his leg after stepping on a landmine near the border.
Authorities reported that ongoing military operations in Myanmar’s Rakhine State, involving the army, Arakan Army, and Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA), have forced millions of Rohingya Muslims to flee. Several villages in Bangladesh’s Cox’s Bazar district have been affected by spillover violence.
Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the unprovoked cross-border firing as a “serious violation of international law” and a threat to neighborly relations, urging Myanmar to take immediate action to prevent further escalation.
