TRINIDAD – Web Desk: Pakistan captain Babar Azam expressed delight after his team secured their first away Test victory since July 2023, defeating West Indies by eight wickets on Day 4 of the second Test in Trinidad.
Chasing a modest target of 75 runs, Pakistan wrapped up the match early on the fourth day. Babar provided the finishing touch with consecutive sixes off Jomel Warrican, leveling the two-match series 1-1 and moving Pakistan ahead of West Indies into eighth place in the ICC World Test Championship standings.
Opener Abdullah Shafique was named Player of the Match for his unbeaten century in the first innings, while Babar narrowly missed out on a hundred with 97 runs. The Pakistan skipper’s tactical decision to include an additional spinner paid off, with Ali Usman and Sajid Khan playing key roles in dismissing West Indies in their second innings.
Babar said the decision to play an additional spinner was made after assessing conditions similar to those in Pakistan. He praised the team’s execution and discipline, saying Shafique’s batting and the spinners’ bowling made the difference. Shafique, who was not initially part of the squad but earned a place after Abdullah Fazal’s injury, described the match as feeling like a debut.
Pakistan will now travel to England for a three-match Test series beginning August 19 at Headingley.
