Attack Reported at Dammam Airport as Saudi Authorities Assess Damage

Date:

Attack at Dammam’s King Fahd International Airport Kills One, Injures Eight

DAMMAM, Saudi Arabia — October 22, 2026: One person was killed and eight others injured in an attack on King Fahd International Airport in Dammam, Saudi Arabia, on Wednesday evening, the country’s General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) said.

The authority confirmed that the incident caused material damage at the airport and said officials were assessing the extent of the damage. The injured were taken to hospital for treatment, with injuries ranging from minor to severe.

GACA did not specify the type of weapon used or identify those responsible for the attack. It said further updates would be issued as more information became available.

Authorities Assess Damage at Airport

The attack has raised fresh concerns about the security of civilian aviation infrastructure in Saudi Arabia. King Fahd International Airport serves Dammam and the surrounding Eastern Province, a strategically important region that includes major energy facilities.

Authorities are assessing the damage and checking the safety of airport facilities. Initial reporting did not establish the full extent of the damage or provide a definitive account of the attack’s effect on airport operations.

The Associated Press reported that flights were diverted following the incident. Travellers should check directly with their airlines and airport authorities for the latest operational information.

Attack Amid Wider Security Concerns

The airport incident came on the same day Saudi authorities reported casualties from a separate drone-related incident at the Shaybah oil field. Saudi Arabia’s Energy Ministry said debris from a drone intercepted by air defences caused a fire in a contractor’s vehicle, killing two people and injuring two others. The ministry said oil-field operations were not affected.

Saudi-led coalition forces also reported intercepting drones directed towards the kingdom, including in the Eastern Province. However, authorities have not publicly established that the same actor was responsible for the Dammam airport attack.

The latest incident follows previous attacks targeting Saudi aviation facilities during escalating regional hostilities. On October 11, Saudi Arabia’s civil aviation authority reported that King Fahd International Airport had been targeted and that damage assessments and safety inspections were underway.

Responsibility Remains Unconfirmed

Although the attacks form part of a broader period of regional insecurity, Saudi authorities have not identified the perpetrator of Wednesday’s Dammam airport attack. Responsibility should therefore not be attributed to any group without further confirmation.

The immediate priorities remain medical treatment for the injured, assessment of airport damage and confirmation of safety arrangements for passengers and personnel.

Further official information is expected as Saudi authorities continue their investigation and damage assessment.
