Ahsan Iqbal to Attend Bangladesh PM Tarique Rahman Oath Ceremony

Date:

Islamabad: (Web Desk) – Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Ahsan Iqbal is set to attend the oath-taking ceremony of Bangladesh’s newly elected Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on behalf of Pakistan.

Sources confirmed that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will not attend the ceremony due to commitments related to an ongoing international tour. However, officials indicated that the premier is expected to visit Bangladesh in the near future to personally congratulate the newly sworn-in leader and further strengthen bilateral ties between the two countries.

The oath-taking ceremony is expected to draw significant international attention, with participation from senior leaders and representatives from several countries, including China, Saudi Arabia, India, Turkiye, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Malaysia, Brunei, Sri Lanka, and Nepal. The presence of regional and global leaders highlights the diplomatic importance of the transition in Bangladesh’s political leadership.

According to official results released by the Election Commission of Bangladesh, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) secured a decisive victory, winning 209 out of 299 seats in parliament and forming a clear majority government. Meanwhile, Jamaat-e-Islami emerged as the second-largest political force, securing 68 seats.

Political analysts note that the formation of a new government in Bangladesh could open opportunities for renewed diplomatic engagement and economic cooperation in South Asia. Pakistan’s representation at the ceremony through Ahsan Iqbal signals Islamabad’s intention to maintain constructive diplomatic relations and engage actively with the region’s evolving political landscape.

Observers also view the event as a platform for informal diplomatic interactions among regional leaders, potentially paving the way for discussions on trade, connectivity, and regional stability.
