Saudi-Led Coalition Says Cruise Missile Intercepted Near Medina

RIYADH, October 15: The Saudi-led military coalition said on Thursday that its air defences intercepted and destroyed a cruise missile in the Medina region of western Saudi Arabia, as missile and drone attacks across the kingdom heightened regional security concerns.

Coalition spokesperson Major General Turki al-Maliki announced the interception in a statement posted on X. The announcement did not identify who launched the missile, specify its intended target or provide details about possible casualties or property damage.

The incident is significant because the Medina region is home to the holy city of Medina, one of Islam’s most important religious centres. However, the coalition’s statement did not indicate that the city itself or any religious site had been targeted.

Missile interception amid rising regional tensions

The reported interception comes as Saudi Arabia faces renewed attacks involving missiles and drones amid an escalation in its conflict with Yemen’s Houthi movement.

The coalition has reported intercepting several incoming projectiles in recent days, including cruise missiles and drones directed towards Riyadh and parts of southern Saudi Arabia. The authorities have not released comprehensive details about damage or casualties associated with every interception.

The latest incident adds to concerns about the geographical spread of security threats facing the kingdom, including risks to civilian infrastructure and transport networks.

Previous incident involving a Medina electricity facility

The coalition previously accused the Houthis of carrying out a drone attack on the Taibah electricity distribution station in the Medina region on September 29.

According to the coalition’s account, the attack disabled a transformer but did not disrupt the wider electricity grid. The facility supplies electricity to the Prophet’s Mosque, one of Islam’s holiest sites. The accusation was reported by Anadolu Agency; details of the separate incident should not be treated as confirmation of the missile’s origin or intended target.

Houthis and the wider Saudi conflict

Saudi Arabia has led a military coalition supporting Yemen’s internationally recognised government against the Houthis since 2015. The movement took control of Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, and other areas in 2014.

The renewed hostilities have included attacks on Saudi airports and energy infrastructure, according to recent international reporting. The developments have raised concerns about civilian safety, regional stability and the potential impact on commercial activity.

Although the coalition has attributed previous attacks to the Houthis, no responsibility for the cruise missile intercepted near Medina was established in the statement announcing Thursday’s incident.

Further details awaited

The coalition’s announcement did not provide information about the missile’s launch location, intended destination or the circumstances that led to its interception.

No confirmed information about casualties or damage was included in the announcement. Further official statements may clarify whether the incident affected civilian areas or critical infrastructure.

For now, the interception remains a developing security story, with the missile’s origin and intended target among the key unanswered questions.

Editorial note: The interception is reported as an announcement by the Saudi-led coalition, not as an independently verified account of the missile’s origin or intended target. Attribution and damage details remain unconfirmed.
