PM Directs Introduction of Brand Pakistan Initiative for Gemstones

ISLAMABAD, PAKISTAN — WEB DESK Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed the introduction of a dedicated “Brand Pakistan” initiative for the country’s gemstone sector, as the government seeks to increase exports, improve international recognition and generate greater economic value from Pakistan’s mineral resources.

The initiative is part of a broader effort to modernise the gemstone industry, strengthen the domestic value chain and encourage local processing instead of exporting valuable stones with limited value addition.

Pakistan possesses significant deposits of gemstones, including emeralds, rubies, topaz, peridot and aquamarine. However, the sector has yet to realise its full export potential, with limited processing capacity, certification challenges and informal trading practices constraining its development.

Government Targets Higher Gemstone Exports

The government’s gemstone reform framework aims to increase the value of exports by improving mining practices, introducing modern technology and expanding local processing facilities.

The policy also seeks to bring more of the gemstone value chain into the formal economy, allowing Pakistani businesses to supply higher-value products to international markets.

A national branding initiative could help establish greater consistency in how Pakistani gemstones are marketed overseas, while improving recognition among buyers, traders and jewellery manufacturers.

The government has previously outlined an ambitious target of raising gemstone exports to $1 billion over five years through policy reforms, improved technology and stronger private-sector participation. Achieving that target will depend on implementation, investment and access to international markets.

Gemstone Centres and Modern Processing

The government is also pursuing the establishment of specialised gemstone centres to support the industry through improved facilities, technical expertise and modern processing methods.

In October, officials discussed plans for a modern gemstone centre in Islamabad as part of efforts to reduce waste, improve product quality and increase the commercial value of precious stones.

The wider reform programme includes geological mapping, improved certification systems, modern mining technology and training for businesses and workers in the sector.

Focus on International Recognition

The proposed Brand Pakistan identity is intended to strengthen the international positioning of Pakistani gemstones and support the country’s broader export-promotion efforts.

Industry development will also require reliable quality certification, transparent supply chains and stronger links between miners, processors, exporters and international buyers.

If implemented effectively, these measures could help Pakistani gemstone businesses move towards higher-value products and compete more effectively in global markets.

The impact of the initiative will depend on how quickly the government translates its branding plans into practical measures, export support and investment across the gemstone industry.
