Mohsin Naqvi Arrives in Peshawar for Key KP Apex Committee Meeting
PESHAWAR, PAKISTAN — October 12, 2026: Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi arrived in Peshawar on Monday to attend a meeting of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Provincial Apex Committee, with officials expected to review security arrangements and counterterrorism measures across the province.
The meeting, scheduled to be chaired by Governor Faisal Karim Kundi at 1pm, comes amid heightened security and political tensions following the federal government’s emergency measures in the province.
Security Plan and Troop Deployment on Agenda
Provincial officials, senior security representatives and Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) officers are expected to participate in the meeting. Discussions are set to focus on reassessing the provincial security plan, addressing militant threats and determining further steps to strengthen law enforcement.
The proposed deployment of troops in 12 districts is also expected to feature on the agenda, alongside related security measures. The meeting is expected to consider how security agencies can improve coordination and respond to threats in affected areas.
Naqvi is also expected to meet Governor Kundi and senior officials during his visit to the provincial capital.
Meeting Follows Emergency Measures
The gathering follows the declaration of an emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on October 11, which suspended the provincial government led by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and placed provincial administration under the governor’s authority.
The federal government has justified the intervention by citing concerns over counterterrorism efforts and coordination with provincial authorities. PTI has rejected the move, describing it as an attack on its political mandate and disputing the government’s allegations.
An 11-member advisory council has been announced to assist in running provincial affairs under the governor.
Focus on Counterterrorism
The apex committee meeting is expected to address the operational capacity of police and the CTD, security coordination and measures aimed at restoring stability in districts facing militant threats.
Governor Kundi has emphasised strengthening law enforcement institutions, targeting militant support networks and improving conditions in underdeveloped areas affected by violence.
Any decisions on troop deployment, operational arrangements or additional security measures will be clearer after the meeting concludes and officials announce its outcomes.
The meeting is taking place at a critical moment for the province, as security concerns intersect with a deepening political dispute between the federal government and PTI.
