Taylor Swift becomes the most-awarded artist in MTV VMA history, surpassing Beyoncé and raising her career total to 33 awards at the 2026 ceremony.
LOS ANGELES, UNITED STATES — WEB DESK: Taylor Swift has made MTV Video Music Awards history, becoming the most-awarded artist in the ceremony’s history after breaking her long-standing tie with Beyoncé at the 2026 VMAs.
Swift entered the ceremony with 30 career VMA wins, level with Beyoncé. Her record-breaking moment came when she received the inaugural Artist Director Honors, taking her career total to 31 and giving her sole possession of the all-time record.
The new honour recognises artists whose work behind the camera has helped advance music-video direction and visual storytelling. Swift has increasingly taken creative control of her videos, writing and directing several projects during her career.
But the record-breaking award was not her only victory of the night.
Swift subsequently won Video of the Year for “The Fate of Ophelia” as well as Best Direction, taking her reported career VMA total to 33 awards, according to Express Urdu.
The Video of the Year victory added another major honour to Swift’s VMA career. Current coverage of the ceremony also confirms that “The Fate of Ophelia” secured the night’s top video prize.
Swift also used the ceremony to unveil the music video for her new song “Patient Zero.” The video, directed by Swift herself, features actors Colin Farrell and Dakota Johnson.
The milestone extends Swift’s record at one of the music industry’s most prominent awards ceremonies. Before Sunday’s event, she and Beyoncé jointly held the record with 30 awards each. Beyoncé had established her previous benchmark after surpassing Madonna’s earlier record.
Swift’s latest achievement also reflects her growing role as a director alongside her music career. She said during the ceremony that she has been involved in around 60 music videos and has written and directed 18 of them.
With the inaugural directing honour and additional competitive wins, the 2026 ceremony marked another record-setting chapter in Swift’s two-decade career.
