US Tells Travellers to Reconsider Saudi Arabia Trips Amid Missile, Drone Threats
WASHINGTON, UNITED STATES — WEB DESK: The United States is advising travellers to reconsider travel to Saudi Arabia, citing threats from Iranian missiles and drones, armed conflict, terrorism and other security concerns as tensions intensify across the Middle East.
The US State Department lists Saudi Arabia at Level 3 — “Reconsider Travel”, according to its official travel advisory. The advisory dated September 15 specifically cites the risk of Iranian drone and missile targeting of American interests, along with armed conflict, terrorism, exit bans and Saudi laws concerning social-media activity.
The warning does not amount to a blanket “Do Not Travel” order for Saudi Arabia. Level 3 means travellers are advised to reconsider their plans because of serious risks.
The stricter Level 4 designation applies to specific high-risk areas, particularly the border with Yemen.
Yemen Border Under Level 4 Warning
The State Department says Americans should not travel to the Saudi-Yemen border because of the threat of terrorism.
US government employees are prohibited from travelling within 20 miles, or approximately 32 kilometres, of the Yemen border because of security risks.
They are also barred from non-essential travel to Qatif, while travel by US government personnel to Jizan, Asir, Najran and Qatif provinces requires special authorisation.
These restrictions are relevant to US government personnel and should not be confused with a nationwide ban on travel by American citizens.
Level 3 Is Not Entirely New
An important detail in the official advisory history is that the United States did not newly raise Saudi Arabia from a lower level to Level 3 on September 15.
The State Department’s official history shows that Saudi Arabia was already at Level 3 on August 29 and March 13, 2026. The September 15 update retained Level 3 and the same risk indicators but revised the advisory summary to reflect additional travel restrictions for US government employees.
This distinction is important for accurate reporting: the latest development is an updated Level 3 advisory amid escalating regional threats, rather than a newly imposed Level 3 classification.
The State Department says that, as of August 30, family members may join US government employees working in Saudi Arabia.
Iranian Missile and Drone Threat Highlighted
The advisory specifically warns about the possibility of Iranian missile and drone attacks targeting American interests in Saudi Arabia.
According to the US Embassy, the threat has continued since hostilities between the United States and Iran began on February 28.
Saudi Arabia has faced repeated security alerts and attacks during the escalating regional conflict.
On Tuesday, Saudi Civil Defence issued alerts across several cities before later announcing that the immediate danger had passed in Jeddah, Abha, Jazan, AlUla, Taif and Yanbu.
The alerts reflected heightened concerns over attacks by Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi movement as fighting in Yemen and threats to Saudi territory intensify.
Saudi Arabia Says Drone Intercepted Near Makkah
The updated US warning comes as Saudi Arabia says its air defences intercepted and destroyed a drone south of Makkah on Tuesday evening before it entered restricted airspace over Islam’s holiest city.
The Saudi-led coalition attributed the drone to Yemen’s Houthis. The Houthis denied targeting Makkah or other Islamic holy sites.
The incident is particularly sensitive because Makkah hosts the Grand Mosque and Kaaba and receives millions of Muslim pilgrims for Hajj and Umrah.
Saudi authorities have also reported attacks elsewhere in the kingdom during the latest escalation.
According to the Express Tribune report, the Saudi-led coalition said 13 civilians were injured in missile and drone attacks on Khamis Mushait, Abha and Taif, with seven homes and two vehicles damaged.
Attacks Put Saudi Energy Infrastructure Under Pressure
The security concerns extend beyond population centres.
Saudi Arabia’s critical East-West oil pipeline has been disrupted following drone attacks, complicating the kingdom’s efforts to export crude while shipping through the Strait of Hormuz remains constrained.
The disruption has forced Saudi Arabia to offer additional crude to Asian buyers using ship-to-ship transfers off Sohar, Oman. Loadings at Yanbu have also been halted, while some September cargoes for European customers have been cancelled.
These developments have contributed to volatility in international energy markets, with Brent crude remaining above $100 per barrel.
What Travellers Should Understand
The US advisory does not state that all travel to Saudi Arabia must stop. Instead, it advises travellers to reconsider whether to make the trip because of elevated security risks.
The official warning currently distinguishes between two levels:
Saudi Arabia generally: Level 3 — Reconsider Travel
Saudi-Yemen border: Level 4 — Do Not Travel
Travellers should also understand that the security environment is changing quickly. Emergency alerts have recently been issued in multiple Saudi cities, and the regional conflict involves missile, drone and maritime threats.
Anyone planning travel should therefore check the latest official advisory immediately before departure rather than relying on an earlier version.
