New case names the SSP Korangi’s mother-in-law, sister-in-law, brother-in-law and police personnel over the alleged assault of a woman and her brother.
Karachi police have registered a new case against relatives of Korangi SSP Fida Hussain Janwari and police personnel over the alleged assault of a woman and her brother in the Defence area.
The FIR was registered at Darakhshan Police Station on the complaint of Noor-ul-Ain, who was allegedly assaulted during the incident at an apartment building in Defence Phase VI.
The development comes after a police inquiry into the incident recommended legal action against the people allegedly involved and several police officials.
New FIR registered after police inquiry
According to the FIR and media reports, the case names the SSP’s mother-in-law, sister-in-law and brother-in-law, along with police personnel who were allegedly present during the incident.
The case was registered under sections including rioting, unlawful assembly, theft, mischief and causing hurt, according to the FIR reported by local media.
The complainant alleged that on the night of August 20, a police official came to her apartment and told her that a woman identified as Maryam was calling her downstairs.
She alleged that Maryam later came upstairs, verbally abused her and assaulted her after she opened the door. The complainant further alleged that her mother was also assaulted during the confrontation.
According to the complaint, Maryam later returned with her daughter and police personnel. The complainant alleged that the group attempted to take their mobile phones and that her brother’s phone was picked up after it fell to the ground.
The complainant further alleged that police personnel damaged a CCTV camera outside the apartment and later entered the flat after breaking the door. These allegations are contained in the complaint and have not been independently established as facts.
Earlier case against affected family questioned
The incident gained widespread attention after CCTV footage emerged on August 28 showing a woman allegedly attacking another woman with a dumbbell while police personnel were present.
The initial police case had been registered against the affected siblings and their mother following a complaint by a woman identified in media reports as Maryam Ali Raza, who was described as a relative of SSP Fida Janwari. Janwari has previously denied being connected to the family.
The police inquiry subsequently found that the allegations against the affected siblings were not substantiated, according to reports. It recommended that the earlier case be placed in B-Class.
Inquiry finds administrative negligence
A departmental inquiry conducted by South DIG Syed Asad Raza held SSP Korangi Fida Janwari responsible for administrative negligence in the handling of the incident.
The report recommended departmental action against the SSP and several police officials, including officers associated with Darakhshan Police Station and personnel from Korangi district.
The inquiry did not establish that Janwari personally ordered the deployment of the police personnel to the apartment. However, it identified a supervisory lapse and recommended that his conduct be examined under the applicable disciplinary rules.
The report also recommended legal proceedings against people seen in the CCTV footage and against police personnel allegedly involved in the incident.
Investigation and legal action continue
The new FIR marks a significant development in the case, which has raised questions about police conduct and the handling of the original complaint.
The earlier case against the affected family is now subject to the recommended B-Class disposal, while the new allegations will be investigated through the criminal justice process.
Any allegations against the nominated individuals remain subject to investigation and judicial determination.
