Iranian Tanker Reportedly Hit Near Kharg Island as Explosions Heard at Key Oil Hub
DUBAI, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES — WEB DESK: An Iranian tanker was reportedly hit near Kharg Island, Iran’s most important oil export hub in the Persian Gulf, on Saturday as several explosions were heard in the area amid renewed military tensions between the United States and Iran.
Iran’s semi-official Fars news agency reported that sounds of explosions were heard from the Gulf near Kharg Island. However, it said there was no visible smoke and the source of the explosions was initially unknown.
Iran’s state-affiliated Nournews subsequently cited unconfirmed local reports claiming that US forces had fired a missile at an Iranian tanker near the island. Asr Iran reported that the vessel was struck by four projectiles while it was being unloaded.
No casualties were reported in the immediate aftermath. Other Iranian reporting said the crew evacuated the tanker following the incident.
Crucially, however, neither Iranian nor US authorities had officially confirmed that American forces carried out the reported tanker strike at the time of Reuters’ latest report. The identity of the attacker and the precise cause of the explosions therefore remained unverified.
That distinction is significant because initial reports describing the incident as a confirmed US attack go beyond what has been independently established.
Why Kharg Island Matters
Kharg Island is strategically critical to Iran’s economy and global energy markets. The island handles about 90% of Iran’s oil exports, making any military action around the terminal potentially significant for Tehran’s export capacity and international crude markets.
The latest incident follows renewed exchanges between US and Iranian forces. On August 31, US forces struck Iranian missile launchers on Larak Island, while Iran responded with missile attacks against US military facilities in Jordan.
US President Donald Trump also recently claimed on social media that Kharg Island was being destroyed, accompanying his post with an AI-generated video. A US official subsequently said no US military strike had taken place against Kharg Island at that time, while Vice President JD Vance described Trump’s post as a message to Tehran rather than an announcement of an attack.
Saturday’s reported tanker incident is therefore a separate and potentially significant development.
Kharg’s strategic importance means any confirmed attack on vessels or infrastructure around the island could heighten concerns over Iran’s oil exports and the security of Persian Gulf shipping.
Oil markets have already reacted strongly to renewed US-Iran hostilities. Brent crude recently climbed above $90 a barrel after fresh exchanges of fire raised fears of further disruption to regional energy supplies.
For now, the tanker incident should be treated as a developing story. Iranian media have reported a strike and explosions, but confirmation from the US military, Iranian authorities or other independent sources will be necessary before responsibility can be definitively attributed.
