Egypt bus crash kills at least 21 in South Sinai, ministry says

Date:

A passenger bus overturned on the Dahab-Nuweibaa road in South Sinai, with 29 people injured, authorities say.

CAIRO, EGYPT — WEB DESK: At least 21 people were killed and 29 others injured when a passenger bus overturned on Egypt’s Dahab-Nuweibaa road in South Sinai on Wednesday, according to Egyptian authorities.

The crash occurred on the road linking the Red Sea resort towns of Dahab and Nuweiba, a popular tourist area on the eastern coast of the Sinai Peninsula.

Egypt’s Health Ministry said 20 ambulances were dispatched to the scene to treat victims and transport the injured to hospitals.

Ten Jordanians among those killed

Jordanian nationals were among the victims.

Jordan’s Foreign Ministry confirmed that Jordanians were travelling on the bus and that some had been killed and injured. Jordanian state television later reported that 10 Jordanians were among those killed.

The full nationality breakdown of the victims has not been released by Egyptian authorities.

The National reported that at least 24 passengers were injured, including four in critical condition, while other reports put the number of injured at 29. The casualty figures may continue to be updated as authorities complete their assessment.

Cause of crash remains unknown

Authorities have not yet established what caused the bus to overturn.

Officials have not publicly confirmed whether speeding, a mechanical failure, road conditions or another factor contributed to the accident.

Investigations are expected to determine the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Emergency response launched

Twenty ambulances were sent to the crash site after authorities received reports of the accident.

Medical teams treated injured passengers before transferring some of them to hospitals in the region. Health authorities ordered medical facilities to increase their level of preparedness and ensure that medicines and other supplies were available.

The crash occurred along a route connecting two well-known Red Sea destinations.

Dahab is popular for diving and snorkelling, while Nuweiba is also a major tourist destination and port serving travellers between Egypt and Jordan.

South Sinai is a major tourist region

The South Sinai governorate attracts international and domestic visitors because of its beaches, coral reefs, marine biodiversity and mountain landscapes.

The deadly crash comes amid a series of serious road accidents reported in Egypt in recent weeks.

Egypt recorded nearly 6,000 road deaths in 2025, according to the country’s state statistics agency, with traffic safety concerns including reckless driving and poor road conditions frequently cited in reports about road accidents.

Authorities are continuing to assess the casualties and investigate the cause of Wednesday’s crash.
