LONDON, UK – Web Desk: Pakistan bowled England out for 290 on Friday after the hosts’ last-wicket pair frustrated the visitors during the morning session of the second Test at Lord’s.
England resumed day two at 248-9 after rain and bad light had restricted the opening day to 56 overs. The hosts added 42 runs in 10.4 overs before Pakistan claimed the final wicket.
Abbas leads Pakistan’s pace attack
Mohammad Abbas was Pakistan’s standout bowler, finishing with 4-73 from 20 overs.
Mohammad Ali claimed three wickets, while Khurram Shahzad and Ali Usman took one wicket each as Pakistan’s pace attack accounted for eight of England’s 10 wickets.
Abbas had already taken four wickets for 56 runs on the opening day, including the dismissals of Ben Duckett, Emilio Gay, Joe Root and Jofra Archer.
Atkinson and Tongue frustrate Pakistan
England’s final pair, Gus Atkinson and Josh Tongue, added 47 runs for the 10th wicket.
Atkinson was eventually dismissed for 45 off 46 balls, including six fours, while Tongue remained unbeaten on 30 from 48 deliveries, with four boundaries.
Their partnership gave England additional runs after the hosts had been reduced to 248-9 overnight.
England’s middle order provides resistance
England’s innings was anchored by Jamie Smith, who scored 61, and Jordan Cox, who made 55.
Smith and Cox helped England recover after Pakistan’s bowlers had reduced the hosts to 77-4 early in the innings.
Pakistan’s disciplined pace attack eventually regained control, but England’s lower order ensured the hosts reached a total of 290.
Pakistan lose two early wickets
Pakistan’s reply began poorly.
Shan Masood was dismissed for one, caught behind off Jofra Archer, with Pakistan on five.
Abdullah Shafique then fell for seven after Josh Tongue successfully claimed the second wicket, leaving Pakistan at 16-2 at lunch.
Young opener Azan Awais was unbeaten on eight at the interval and was due to be joined by captain Babar Azam after lunch.
Pakistan therefore trailed England by 274 runs at the lunch break.
Imam-ul-Haq unavailable
Pakistan’s batting options have also been affected by an injury to Imam-ul-Haq.
The opener suffered a low-grade left calf strain while fielding on the opening day, and the Pakistan Cricket Board said his participation in the remainder of the match remained in doubt.
Pakistan consequently opened their innings with Shan Masood and Azan Awais.
England lead the Test series
England entered the second Test with a 1-0 lead in the three-match series after winning the opening Test at Headingley by an innings and 103 runs.
Pakistan’s strong bowling performance at Lord’s has kept them in contention, but the early loss of two wickets has given England renewed momentum on the second morning.
