Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi calls on the UN and Security Council to reject Washington’s latest economic measures and assess their humanitarian impact.
TEHRAN, Iran – Web Desk: Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has called on the United Nations and the UN Security Council to take action against what Tehran describes as unlawful and unilateral US economic measures targeting Iran.
According to Iran’s official IRNA news agency, Araghchi sent a letter to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres outlining Iran’s objections to Washington’s latest economic policy and its efforts to discourage other countries from maintaining trade and cooperation with Tehran.
Iran calls US measures a violation of UN principles
In the letter, Araghchi argued that increasing economic pressure on Iran and seeking to prevent other countries from trading or cooperating with Tehran violate principles contained in the UN Charter.
The Iranian foreign minister described the US measures as illegal, unilateral and coercive, and argued that countries should not use their economic and political power to pressure other sovereign states.
He urged the United Nations and Security Council to reject and condemn the measures while upholding the principles of Iranian sovereignty and equality among states.
Tehran seeks humanitarian impact assessment
Araghchi also raised concerns about the humanitarian and human rights consequences of US actions against Iran.
He called for a formal report examining the humanitarian and human rights issues resulting from the measures.
Iran has also called for consideration of compensation or other forms of redress for what it says are damages caused by US actions.
US expands economic pressure on Iran
The Iranian appeal comes as Washington has intensified economic pressure on Tehran.
The United States recently announced additional sanctions and measures aimed at disrupting Iran’s economic relationships with other countries. Washington has also threatened secondary sanctions against entities and countries that continue certain dealings with Iran.
Iran has rejected the campaign and warned that it will resist further economic pressure.
The latest dispute comes amid a broader US-Iran confrontation that has also affected regional security and maritime trade around the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran seeks international support
Araghchi’s letter places the issue before the UN at a time when Tehran is seeking to maintain economic ties with countries willing to continue trading with Iran despite US pressure.
Iran has argued that Washington’s secondary-sanctions policy attempts to force sovereign governments to change their lawful trade relationships.
The United States, meanwhile, maintains that its sanctions are intended to increase pressure on Tehran and restrict the resources available to the Iranian government.
Diplomatic efforts continue
The sanctions dispute is unfolding alongside renewed diplomatic activity over the wider US-Iran crisis.
Qatar has been involved in mediation efforts, while Iran and Oman have discussed arrangements for a temporary shipping corridor through the Strait of Hormuz and possible mine-clearing operations.
Pakistan has also been involved in diplomatic contacts aimed at reducing regional tensions.
