Asma Mushtaq reportedly died while descending from Spantik after successfully reaching the summit of the 7,027-metre peak.
WEB DESK: Pakistani mountaineer Asma Mushtaq has died during her descent from Spantik Peak, one of Pakistan’s prominent high-altitude mountains in Gilgit-Baltistan.
According to reports, Mushtaq had successfully reached the summit of the 7,027-metre Spantik, also known as Golden Peak, before encountering difficulties during the descent.
The circumstances surrounding her death were not immediately clear.
Tragedy strikes during descent
Mountaineering experts consider the descent phase particularly challenging, with climbers facing risks associated with fatigue, changing weather conditions, steep terrain and high altitude.
Mushtaq’s death has cast a shadow over the mountaineering community in Pakistan, where Spantik remains a popular destination for international and local climbing expeditions.
The peak is located in the Nagar District of Gilgit-Baltistan and is considered one of the major climbing objectives in the Karakoram range.
Spantik among Pakistan’s prominent climbing peaks
Rising to approximately 7,027 metres, Spantik is among Pakistan’s best-known non-8,000-metre peaks.
The mountain attracts climbers from Pakistan and abroad because of its challenging terrain and relatively accessible climbing route compared with some of the region’s more technically demanding peaks.
Despite its reputation as a comparatively accessible high-altitude climb, expeditions remain exposed to serious risks associated with altitude, weather and difficult terrain.
Mushtaq’s death once again highlights the dangers faced by mountaineers operating in Pakistan’s high-altitude regions.
Further details about the incident, including the circumstances of the accident and arrangements for the recovery of her body, are expected as authorities and expedition teams provide more information.
