Arsenal Thrash Manchester City 3-0 to Win Community Shield

CARDIFF, WALES — WEB DESK: Arsenal made an emphatic start to the new English football season by sweeping aside Manchester City 3-0 to win the 2026 Community Shield at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium on Sunday.

Goals from Riccardo Calafiori, Kai Havertz and captain Martin Odegaard secured the trophy for Mikel Arteta’s Premier League champions and handed new Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca a difficult first competitive match in charge.

Arsenal struck almost immediately, with Calafiori finding the net after just 23 seconds. Havertz doubled their advantage before half-time before Odegaard completed the scoring shortly after the restart.

Calafiori strikes inside opening minute

City barely had time to settle before Arsenal broke through.

Myles Lewis-Skelly released Calafiori, who advanced into the penalty area and finished past Gianluigi Donnarumma to give the Gunners a sensational early lead.

The goal was timed at approximately 23 seconds and was the fastest in this fixture for 58 years, according to Reuters.

Arsenal maintained their intensity after the opener, disrupting City’s attempts to build possession while looking dangerous whenever they moved forward.

The second goal arrived in the 28th minute.

Odegaard helped create the opening before new signing Christos Tzolis provided the final ball for Havertz, who headed home to give Arsenal a commanding 2-0 advantage.

Odegaard finishes off Manchester City

Any hopes of a Manchester City comeback were effectively extinguished three minutes into the second half.

Tzolis was involved again, providing his second assist of the afternoon as Odegaard finished Arsenal’s third goal.

The performance was particularly encouraging for Arteta because several of Arsenal’s summer additions made an immediate impression.

Tzolis contributed two assists, while Bruno Guimaraes featured in midfield as Arsenal displayed the cohesion and intensity that carried them to last season’s Premier League title.

City struggled to produce a sustained response despite having attacking talent including Erling Haaland at their disposal.

Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya dealt with City’s limited threat as the Gunners protected their clean sheet and completed a comprehensive victory.

Strong statement from Premier League champions

The victory represents Arsenal’s 18th Community Shield triumph and provides another piece of silverware for a team preparing to defend its Premier League crown.

Arsenal begin the new league campaign as defending English champions for the first time in more than two decades.

Their performance in Cardiff suggested there has been little reduction in intensity following last season’s title success.

The Gunners also enter the campaign with unfinished business in Europe after losing the Champions League final to Paris Saint-Germain on penalties last season.

Arteta has stressed that his squad remains hungry for further trophies, and the dominant display against City offered early evidence of that ambition.

Tough beginning for Maresca era

For Manchester City, the result represented a sobering beginning to the post-Pep Guardiola era.

Maresca has taken charge following Guardiola’s trophy-laden decade at the Etihad Stadium and faces the challenge of rebuilding a team seeking to return to the top of English football.

City finished seven points behind Arsenal in the Premier League last season, and the gap between the teams was evident in Cardiff as the champions produced the sharper and more cohesive performance.

The result does not necessarily predict how the Premier League campaign will unfold. The Community Shield has historically been an unreliable indicator of who will ultimately win the league.

But Arsenal could hardly have asked for a more convincing opening statement.

A three-goal victory over one of their principal domestic rivals, a clean sheet and immediate contributions from new arrivals gave Arteta several reasons for optimism as the serious business of defending the Premier League title begins.

Final Score: Arsenal 3-0 Manchester City
Goals: Calafiori 1’, Havertz 28’, Odegaard 48’
