Iran Criticises Pakistan-Türkiye-Saudi Defence Pact as ‘Paper Agreement’

Date:

Iranian lawmaker Ebrahim Rezaei says the trilateral pact cannot provide Riyadh with the security guarantees it seeks.

TEHRAN, IRAN — WEB DESK: Iranian lawmaker Ebrahim Rezaei, a member of Iran’s Parliament National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, has criticised the newly signed defence agreement between Pakistan, Türkiye and Saudi Arabia, saying it cannot provide Riyadh with the security guarantees it expects.

According to media reports, Rezaei made the remarks while commenting on the trilateral defence cooperation agreement signed by Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye amid heightened tensions in the Middle East.

Iran questions security guarantees

In a statement shared on social media, Rezaei described the agreement as a “paper agreement” and argued that it would not provide Saudi Arabia with lasting security.

He said Riyadh should recognise that relying on security arrangements with Pakistan and Türkiye would not necessarily guarantee protection against future threats.

Rezaei also referred to Saudi Arabia’s longstanding security relationship with the United States, arguing that decades of dependence on Washington had not provided Riyadh with complete security.

Call for Saudi policy review

The Iranian parliamentarian urged the Saudi leadership to reconsider its security policies and reduce its reliance on other countries for national defence.

His comments represent the Iranian side’s initial criticism of a defence arrangement that has been presented by Pakistan, Türkiye and Saudi Arabia as a framework for stronger collective security and strategic coordination.

Pact comes amid regional tensions

The agreement comes at a time of heightened security tensions across the Middle East.

Under the pact, an armed attack against any one of the three countries will be regarded as an attack against all three, establishing a framework for collective deterrence and expanded defence cooperation.

The agreement also aims to strengthen coordination among the three countries on defence and security matters.

For Pakistan, the agreement marks another step in its longstanding defence relationship with Saudi Arabia while also reflecting growing strategic cooperation with Türkiye.

For Riyadh, the arrangement could provide an additional layer of strategic coordination as regional security concerns continue to evolve.

Iran’s criticism indicates that the new defence framework could also have wider geopolitical implications, particularly as regional powers reassess their security partnerships.
