Iran claims it targeted two oil tankers under US aerial surveillance

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps says it targeted two oil tankers attempting to transit near the Strait of Hormuz. The claims have not been independently verified, and no US response has been issued.

TEHRAN, Iran — WEB DESK: Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has claimed that it targeted two oil tankers attempting to transit near the Strait of Hormuz, alleging the vessels were travelling along an alternative maritime route under US aerial surveillance.

In a statement, the IRGC said the tankers did not use what it described as Iran’s designated shipping route through the Strait of Hormuz and instead followed an “undeclared route” that Tehran alleged was backed by the United States.

Iran describes maritime operation

According to the IRGC, Iranian forces intercepted the two tankers during the operation and halted their movement.

The statement further claimed that four additional oil tankers changed course and turned back instead of continuing their voyage after the Iranian action.

Iran said the operation was intended to enforce its maritime directives in the strategically important waterway.

No details on vessels or casualties

The IRGC did not identify the two tankers, disclose their cargoes or nationalities, or provide information about their crews.

It also did not report whether the vessels sustained damage or whether there were any casualties during the reported incident.

No independent confirmation

At the time of publication, the United States, the companies operating the vessels and international maritime authorities had not issued official statements confirming or denying Iran’s claims.

The reported incident has not been independently verified by neutral sources.

Shipping risks remain in focus

Security analysts say the Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most strategically important maritime chokepoints, with a significant share of global crude oil exports passing through the waterway.
