Speaking to The Wall Street Journal, President Trump said the United States possesses more ammunition than any other country in the world, and that its stockpiles far exceed current requirements. He said concerns circulating about US defense capabilities were not accurate.
The president’s remarks came after The New York Times reported that during high-level meetings within the US administration, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Dan Caine had warned that if military operations against Iran were to expand further, stockpiles of interceptor missiles used in US air defense systems could come under pressure.
According to that report, some US military officials had expressed concern that interceptor missiles used in the Patriot and other defense systems could be left in limited numbers, potentially affecting future military strategy.
However, The Wall Street Journal cited US Central Command chief Admiral Brad Cooper as saying that American forces remain capable of operating effectively with the defense resources currently available.
The report further noted that current US military strategy is focused on targeting Iran’s missile-launching capability at an early stage, in order to reduce the likelihood of large-scale missile attacks. Any further military action in this regard would require final approval from President Trump.
