Amnesty Urges India to End Force Against Youth Protesters

Date:

Amnesty International has called on Indian authorities to immediately halt the use of force against young protesters, expressing concern over what it described as the excessive use of police powers during demonstrations.

New Delhi, India – Web Desk: In a statement, the global human rights organization alleged that peaceful dissent in India was being suppressed and that police had used unnecessary and excessive force against young demonstrators.

Amnesty also claimed that authorities erected barricades to prevent protesters from reaching Parliament House and imposed restrictions that included the suspension of metro services and mobile internet in parts of the capital.

The rights group urged the Indian government to conduct an independent and impartial investigation into allegations of baton charges and shelling during the protests.

Amnesty said accountability and respect for the right to peaceful assembly were essential, calling on authorities to ensure that law enforcement actions comply with international human rights standards.

The Indian government had not immediately responded to Amnesty International’s latest statement.
