Andy Burnham Elected UK Labour Leader, Set to Become Prime Minister

Date:

Andy Burnham has been elected unopposed as the new leader of the UK Labour Party and is set to become Britain’s next prime minister on Monday, according to media reports.

London, United Kingdom – Web Desk: The transition follows Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s previously announced decision to step down as Labour leader and prime minister. Reports say Starmer is expected to formally submit his resignation to King Charles III, after which Burnham will move into 10 Downing Street and announce his new cabinet.

In his first remarks after being elected, Burnham pledged to lead the United Kingdom on “a new path” and thanked Starmer for his service to both the Labour Party and the country. He said the Labour Party remains united and ready to move forward under new leadership.

Starmer had announced his intention to resign last month, stating he would fully support an orderly and smooth transfer of power. He became prime minister after leading Labour to a landslide victory in the 2024 UK general election, ending 14 years of Conservative Party rule.
