Newly appointed Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus has reaffirmed his confidence in Cristiano Ronaldo, saying the veteran forward will continue to be selected for the national team as long as he remains fit and available.
Lisbon, Portugal – Web Desk: Speaking at his first press conference after taking charge of Portugal, Jorge Jesus said Ronaldo would always be considered for selection if he is capable of representing the national side.
“I will continue to select Cristiano Ronaldo as long as he is playing and is fit for the national team,” the coach said, adding that he has not yet spoken to the Portuguese captain but plans to meet him soon to discuss his international future.
Jorge Jesus stressed that Ronaldo would never be a problem for either the team or the coaching staff, describing him as an icon of Portuguese football whose legacy will remain part of the nation’s sporting history.
The 71-year-old coach worked with Ronaldo last season at Saudi Pro League club Al Nassr, where they guided the team to the league title. Jesus also revealed that Ronaldo had repeatedly expressed his desire to finish his club career with Al Nassr.
The 41-year-old football star faced criticism following Portugal’s disappointing FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign. After the team’s Round of 16 exit against Spain, Ronaldo hinted that it could have been his final World Cup, although he has not officially announced his retirement from international football.
Jorge Jesus is expected to remain Portugal’s head coach until after the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by Portugal, Spain, and Morocco.
