New York – Web Desk: The New York City Mayor’s Office canceled a scheduled meeting between a senior official and an Iranian representative following intervention from the U.S. State Department, according to media reports .
The meeting was planned between Anna Maria Archila, Commissioner of the Mayor’s Office for International Affairs, and an Iranian official, alongside two other senior officials from the mayor’s office, to meet with Iran’s representative to the United Nations, Amir Saeid Iravani .
Mayor Claims No Prior Knowledge
Mayor Zohran Mamdani has claimed he had no prior knowledge of the planned meeting, stating he was unaware of the arrangement . According to reports, Archila allegedly did not inform either the State Department or Mayor Mamdani about the meeting in advance .
A State Department official told City Journal that after learning of the meeting, the department contacted the Mamdani administration to make it clear that the meeting was “unacceptable.” Following the State Department’s intervention, Archila was reportedly reprimanded and ordered to cancel the meeting .
The Mayor’s Office for International Affairs later confirmed that Archila “did not meet and will not meet” with the Iranian official .
Meeting Falls Amid High Tensions
The planned meeting comes at a time of heightened tensions between the United States and Iran. The U.S. has recently conducted airstrikes on Iranian targets, and Iran has reportedly been accused of planning to assassinate President Donald Trump .
The incident has drawn criticism of the mayor’s office, with some questioning the judgment of scheduling such a meeting during a period of active military conflict and diplomatic strain between the two nations .
