Boston, United States – Web Desk: FIFA has announced the match officials for the opening quarter-final of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but the appointments have triggered widespread debate after all five officials selected for the France vs Morocco clash were revealed to be from Argentina.
The quarter-final will be played in Boston on the night of July 9. According to FIFA’s official announcement, the match referee, both assistant referees, the reserve assistant referee and the fourth official are all Argentine nationals.
The appointments have drawn strong reactions on social media, where football fans questioned FIFA’s decision to appoint an all-Argentine officiating team while Argentina remains a participant in the tournament.
Several users alleged that the decision could raise concerns over neutrality and transparency, although no evidence has been presented to suggest any wrongdoing by the appointed officials.
Former West Indies captain Carlos Brathwaite also commented on the controversy, posting on X that FIFA should “at least try to hide it,” suggesting the appointments appeared to show bias.
In another post, Brathwaite referred to Argentina’s previous World Cup match against Egypt, expressing concern over what he described as controversial officiating. Other football fans questioned why referees from a nation still competing in the tournament had been assigned to oversee a major knockout fixture.
FIFA has not issued any response to the criticism at the time of publication.
