Dallas, United States – (Sports Desk) Egypt created history by defeating Australia 4-2 in a dramatic penalty shootout to qualify for the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 for the first time after a thrilling Round of 32 encounter.
The match ended 1-1 after regulation and extra time, forcing the contest into penalties, where Egypt converted all four of their spot-kicks while Australia missed two, sealing a memorable victory.
Egypt took an early lead in the 13th minute when Imam Ashour found the back of the net after an impressive attacking move. The Pharaohs maintained their 1-0 advantage until halftime with a disciplined defensive performance.
Australia restored parity early in the second half after an unfortunate own goal by Egypt defender Mohamed Hany, leaving the score level at 1-1. Despite several opportunities for both sides, neither team was able to find the winner during normal time.
Extra time also failed to separate the two teams, with both sides unable to convert their chances over the additional 30 minutes.
