Nuclear Option Against Asteroids: Scientists Propose Atomic Defense for Earth

Date:

WASHINGTON D.C., United States – Web Desk: In a groundbreaking new study, scientists have proposed that deploying nuclear devices inside an asteroid could serve as a viable last-resort defense strategy to protect Earth from a catastrophic collision.

The research suggests that if a dangerous space rock is discovered with only days of warning, burying an atomic bomb within its surface and detonating it might be the most effective method to neutralize the threat.

Currently, astronomers confirm that no known asteroid poses an imminent danger to our planet in the foreseeable future. However, experts warn that new cosmic objects are constantly being detected, and humanity could face a scenario where reaction time is critically limited to just a few days. The scientific community is actively exploring various planetary defense mechanisms, including kinetic impactors—such as the DART mission—which involve crashing spacecraft into asteroids to alter their trajectory.

While these conventional methods are effective with sufficient lead time, researchers argue they become inadequate in emergency situations where time is extremely short. In such high-stakes scenarios, the study posits that an internal nuclear detonation could fragment the asteroid into smaller, less destructive pieces or significantly alter its course, thereby averting a potential global disaster. Nevertheless, the scientists emphasize that this approach requires extensive further research, rigorous testing, and international collaboration to ensure safety and viability before any real-world application.
