Dallas, United States – Web Desk: Argentina secured their place in the Round of 32 at the FIFA World Cup 2026 after a 2-0 victory over Austria, powered by a historic double from Lionel Messi at the Dallas Stadium on Monday.
The defending champions produced a commanding performance in Group J, marking their second consecutive win of the tournament and confirming early qualification for the knockout stage.
Messi opened the scoring in the 39th minute, finishing a well-worked attacking move to give Argentina the lead after a missed penalty earlier in the first half. Despite the setback, Argentina maintained pressure with several attacking chances.
Austria attempted to respond after the break, with Marcel Sabitzer coming close in the 47th minute, but Argentina’s defence remained composed. Goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez also made a crucial save from a set-piece in the 56th minute to preserve the lead.
In stoppage time, Messi struck again to seal the victory, doubling Argentina’s advantage and ending the match at 2-0.
The Argentine captain also made World Cup history by becoming the tournament’s all-time leading goalscorer. His brace took his total to 18 World Cup goals, surpassing Germany’s Miroslav Klose, who previously held the record with 16. Brazil legend Ronaldo Nazário remains third on the list with 15 goals.
The milestone further cements Messi’s legacy on football’s biggest stage as Argentina continue their title defence.
