Washington, United States – Web Desk: Trump criticises Italy PM Meloni over diplomacy, NATO stance.
US President Donald Trump has once again taken a swipe at Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in a series of remarks posted on social media, escalating diplomatic tensions and drawing criticism from several international observers.
Trump claimed that during the G7 summit in France, Meloni was “insistent” on taking photographs with him, suggesting a personal political motivation behind her interactions.
He further alleged that the Italian leader is now seeking closer ties with the United States amid declining domestic popularity, comments that have not been independently verified.
In his post, Trump also criticised Italy’s stance on US-led efforts to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, saying Rome did not support Washington’s position.
The former US president claimed that Italy refused to allow US forces access to its airbases and runways, which he said created logistical challenges for American military operations.
Trump extended his criticism to NATO, arguing that the alliance had not fully supported the United States despite Washington spending significant resources on the defence of its allies, including Italy.
He also claimed that the United States had already “defeated Iran militarily” and suggested that Meloni’s outreach was aimed at boosting her domestic approval ratings.
Trump concluded his remarks with a pointed statement saying it was “too late” for renewed friendship, adding: “Not now, thank you.”
The comments have sparked debate across political circles, with analysts describing the tone as unusually confrontational ahead of key international diplomatic engagements.
