Moscow, Russia – Sports Desk: In a historic and emotionally charged FIFA World Cup opener, Iran fought back twice to secure a dramatic 2-2 draw against New Zealand, overcoming immense challenges both on and off the pitch.
The tournament marked an unprecedented moment in World Cup history as it kicked off in a host nation amid active conflict involving one of the participating teams. Iran had faced continuous uncertainty since February following the US-Israeli bombing campaign, with questions lingering over whether the team would even be able to participate.
Complicating matters further, visa issues forced the Iranian squad to relocate their training base from the United States to Mexico. Adding to the logistical nightmare, 11 support staff members were denied entry into the United States, further disrupting the team’s preparations.
Despite these immense hurdles, Team Melli delivered a resilient performance against New Zealand in their Group Stage opener.
New Zealand took the lead in the 7th minute through a combined effort from Chris Wood and Elijah Just. Iran responded brilliantly in the 32nd minute when Riza Rezaeian found the back of the net to level the score.
The All Whites regained their advantage in the second half when Just struck again, but Iran refused to surrender. Mohammad Mohebbi rose high to power home a header, restoring parity for the second time.
Both teams pushed relentlessly for a winner in the closing stages, but the match ultimately ended in a well-earned draw. A large contingent of Iranian supporters filled the stands throughout the match, passionately cheering their team through every twist and turn.
