WASHINGTON – Web Desk: President Donald Trump has sharply criticized Democratic lawmakers and four dissenting Republicans after the House of Representatives passed a resolution limiting presidential war powers regarding Iran, calling them unpatriotic and enemies of the state.
Despite efforts by Speaker Mike Johnson, the resolution to restrict President Trump’s authority in the Iran war passed with 215 votes in favor and 208 against. The resolution was passed under the 1973 War Powers Act, meaning President Trump can no longer conduct any unilateral military action or airstrikes against Iran without prior congressional approval.
The biggest blow to the President was that four members of his own Republican Party broke ranks and voted with the opposition Democrats. Trump attacked the four lawmakers, stating they should be ashamed of betraying the party line for cheap fame. In a social media statement, Trump called the House vote meaningless and contrary to national interests, accusing Democrats of working against the country’s interests.
President Trump claimed that Democrats have gone so far in political animosity that they are determined to make the country fail just to prevent him from succeeding. He stated that the resolution was passed at a sensitive time when he is engaged in final and decisive negotiations to end the three-month-long war with Iran, questioning who could commit such an act against their own country when the world knows how far peace talks have progressed.
While Democrats celebrated their victory in the House, the White House has rejected the move as unconstitutional, and President Trump is likely to veto the resolution.
