Web Desk – May 16, 2026: China has begun exercising “caution” in its relations and cooperation with Iran following former US President Donald Trump’s recent visit to Beijing, a US envoy has claimed.
Michael Waltz, the US representative to the United Nations, told media that the Trump administration’s growing diplomatic and economic engagement with Gulf nations has pushed Beijing to reconsider openly supporting Iran.
Waltz said China is now adopting a more careful strategy in the region, prioritizing its trade and energy interests – particularly in light of ongoing tensions in the Strait of Hormuz and the broader Gulf region.
Neither China nor Iran has issued an official response to the US envoy’s claims. Global analysts note that Beijing continues to maintain close energy and trade ties with Tehran despite the alleged shift in posture.
