French Open Prize Money Row Sparks Boycott Warning

Date:

Paris, France – Web Desk: A growing dispute over prize money at the French Open has triggered warnings of a potential player boycott, as leading tennis stars demand a larger share of tournament revenues.

World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka has cautioned Grand Slam organisers that failure to address players’ concerns could lead to collective action. Her comments follow a joint statement issued by around 20 top players expressing dissatisfaction with the current prize money structure at French Open.

Players argue that their share of tournament revenue remains disproportionately low despite being the main attraction for fans. According to their estimates, prize money at Roland Garros this year accounts for less than 15% of total revenue, with calls to raise it to at least 22%.

In addition to financial demands, players are also pushing for greater investment in welfare programmes and improved representation in decision-making processes.

Sabalenka said the sport’s appeal depends heavily on players, who deserve fair compensation for their role in driving global viewership and engagement.

American star Coco Gauff backed the stance, stressing that collective action is key to meaningful change and will benefit future generations of players.

However, world No. 3 Iga Swiatek described a boycott as a “strong step,” urging dialogue and negotiations as the preferred path forward.

The dispute highlights ongoing tensions between players and organisers in professional tennis, as debates over revenue distribution continue to intensify ahead of major tournaments.
