New York, United States – Web Desk: United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has warned that disruptions to maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz are putting severe strain on the global economy.
In a statement, Guterres said impediments to safe navigation through the critical waterway are already affecting global energy supplies, transportation networks, industrial output, and food markets.
Posting on social media, the UN chief said the consequences of rising tensions in the Middle East are becoming more serious with each passing moment, adding that instability in such a key maritime route is disrupting global supply chains.
“The situation is exerting increasing pressure on the global economy,” he said, warning that continued disruption could deepen economic uncertainty worldwide.
Guterres urged the international community to prioritise diplomacy and immediate dialogue, calling for urgent steps to de-escalate tensions and prevent further deterioration in the region.
He cautioned that the current crisis could have far-reaching consequences, not only for the Middle East but for the global economy at large.
