Karachi Mayor Says Comparing Lahore and Karachi Is Unfair, Calls for Major Funding

Date:

Lahore, Pakistan – Web Desk: Mayor of Karachi, Murtaza Wahab, has said that comparing Karachi with Lahore is not appropriate, stressing that the country’s largest city requires significant financial resources to become self-sufficient.

Speaking during a visit to the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) headquarters in Lahore, Wahab said Karachi’s roads are typically cleared within two to three hours during rainfall, but added that political comparisons between cities should be avoided. “Instead of comparisons, we should work together for better urban management,” he said.

The Karachi mayor visited Lahore along with a delegation and held talks with Punjab’s Housing Minister Bilal Yasin. He announced that Karachi authorities are entering into an agreement with WASA Lahore and plan to adopt its strategies to improve urban services.

Wahab noted that cities around the world share administrative experiences and that such collaboration can help improve service delivery for citizens. He also invited Punjab officials to visit Karachi and review ongoing development projects.

Highlighting Karachi’s challenges, Wahab said the city needs substantial investment to stand on its own feet. He added that projects are underway to utilize water for industrial purposes and to conserve potable water for urban supply.

He also pointed out that while WASA Lahore has increased tariffs, Karachi has not implemented similar measures.

On the occasion, Bilal Yasin said Punjab authorities are ready to share their experience and extend full cooperation to Karachi, particularly in dealing with rain-related challenges. He added that Lahore’s Safe City system enables authorities to monitor the entire province from a central control room.

The exchange reflects growing inter-city cooperation aimed at improving infrastructure, water management, and urban governance in Pakistan.
