Washington, United States – Web Desk: Britain’s King Charles III made a light-hearted remark aimed at US President Donald Trump during a state dinner at the White House, referencing historical rivalries in North America.
Speaking at the formal event, King Charles humorously suggested that if Britain had not played its role in history, Americans “would be speaking French.” The comment drew on colonial-era competition between Britain and France in North America prior to US independence.
The British monarch’s remark was also a subtle response to a recent statement by President Trump, who had said that without American intervention in World War II, European countries might be speaking German.
Addressing Trump directly, King Charles said: “You recently remarked that if it weren’t for America, Europe would be speaking German — so I might venture to say that if it weren’t for us, you would be speaking French.”
He further referenced the 250-year rivalry between British and French colonial powers in North America before the United States gained independence.
Trump had earlier made his comments during a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos in January, where he highlighted America’s historical role in global conflicts, including World War II.
The exchange added a moment of levity to the otherwise formal state dinner, reflecting the complex but longstanding relationship between the United States and the United Kingdom.
