Berlin, Germany – Web Desk: The European Union has signaled a potential easing of economic sanctions on Iran if Tehran agrees to a negotiated settlement, according to German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
Speaking in a statement, Merz said EU member states are prepared to relax sanctions should Iran demonstrate willingness to compromise. He added that there was no opposition within the bloc to easing restrictions under such conditions.
However, the German leader cautioned that Iran must take concrete steps, saying that additional pressure may be necessary as negotiations continue.
Addressing broader geopolitical issues, Merz also reaffirmed the EU’s position on Russia, stating that pressure would be maintained to bring an end to the conflict in Ukraine.
He further noted that Ukraine’s immediate accession to the European Union is not feasible, though a pre-accession pathway has been proposed to support its long-term integration.
