WASHINGTON, United States – Web Desk: A special envoy of US President Donald Trump has reportedly proposed replacing Iran with Italy in the upcoming FIFA World Cup, triggering fresh debate over politics and sports.
According to reports, Trump’s special representative Paolo Zampolli presented the idea to FIFA President Gianni Infantino and President Trump.
The proposal is reportedly linked to broader efforts to improve ties between Trump and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni after relations were strained over the Iran conflict and criticism involving Pope Leo.
Despite the proposal, Iran’s national football team has already confirmed its participation in the FIFA World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
President Donald Trump has also publicly stated that Iran’s team would be welcomed at the tournament.
The development has sparked discussion over whether geopolitics should influence international sporting events, particularly as tensions in the Middle East remain high.
