London, United Kingdom – Web Desk: Noah Thain has made history by becoming the first-ever injury substitute player in English county cricket following the introduction of a new regulation this season.
The 21-year-old all-rounder was brought into the Essex squad after captain Tom Westley suffered a finger fracture during their County Championship match against Hampshire. Westley was forced to retire hurt on 28 after being struck by a delivery from fast bowler Sonny Baker.
Medical staff later confirmed that Westley would be unable to continue in the match, prompting Essex to request a substitution under the newly introduced injury replacement rule. Match referee Steve Davis approved the inclusion of Thain as a like-for-like replacement.
Under the rules, Thain is permitted to bat but is not allowed to bowl, offering Essex the unusual advantage of fielding an additional batter in their lineup.
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) implemented the injury substitution rule this season to address unforeseen player injuries and ensure fairness in competitive matches. Additionally, Westley will now undergo an eight-day mandatory cooling-off period, ruling him out of Essex’s next fixture.
