Middle East Crisis Worse Than ’70s Oil Shocks, Says IEA Chief

Date:

Paris – Web Desk: Fatih Birol, head of the International Energy Agency (IEA), has warned that the ongoing crisis in the Middle East has already disrupted more than 12 million barrels of oil per day.

Speaking on the global energy situation, Birol cautioned that oil supply losses could double in April compared to March. He said the IEA is considering releasing strategic reserves if crude oil or refined products are needed to stabilize markets.

Birol highlighted that nearly 40 major energy assets in the Middle East have been affected, making the current crisis worse than the oil shocks of the 1970s and the 2022 Russian gas supply disruptions.

“The biggest challenge is shortages of jet fuel and diesel, which have already impacted Asia and are expected to affect Europe in April and May,” he added.
