CAF Strips Senegal of 2025 AFCON Title After Controversial Final

Date:

Cairo, Egypt – Web Desk: The Confederation of African Football has overturned Senegal’s victory in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final, awarding the championship to Morocco.

Senegal initially defeated Morocco in the January final, but the match was marred by controversy when Senegalese players walked off the pitch in protest against the referee. The protest caused a 14-minute interruption.

Morocco filed an official appeal with CAF, citing the disruption and requesting the result be reviewed. CAF’s appeals board ruled in favor of Morocco, stating that leaving the field constitutes a forfeit under Article 84 of the tournament regulations.

CAF explained that Senegal’s players violated Article 82 by abandoning the match, triggering Article 84, which deems a walkout equivalent to forfeiting the game. As a result, Morocco has been officially awarded a 3–0 victory.

The decision has sparked widespread discussion across African football communities and social media platforms, highlighting CAF’s strict enforcement of tournament rules.
