Afghanistan Faces Food Shortages Amid Taliban Economic Policies

Date:

KABUL, Afghanistan – Web Desk : Afghanistan is facing the threat of a severe economic crisis and potential food shortages due to the Taliban government’s economic policies, local traders and experts have warned on March 10, 2026.

According to Afghan media outlet De Khama Press, business communities in the country have raised alarms over growing regional tensions and trade disruptions, which could push the country toward a serious food crisis.

Khan Jan Alkuzai, a board member of the Afghanistan Chamber of Commerce and Investment, criticized Taliban policies, stating that traders are being pressured to sell imported food items, which were purchased at high costs, at lower prices.

He added that trade restrictions with Pakistan and regional instability have led to rising prices of essential commodities. A decrease in imports is further heightening the risk of food shortages. Traders report that current market stocks can sustain the population for only one to one-and-a-half months. Without alternative trade routes, the situation could worsen significantly.

Experts noted that ongoing trade obstacles with Pakistan and the current situation in Iran are gradually pushing Afghanistan toward a deeper economic crisis. Despite growing economic pressure, the Taliban government continues efforts to maintain control, while the country remains largely isolated on the international stage.
