The official stated that the operation had been in planning for months and that the launch date was decided weeks in advance.
Israel described the strike as a pre-emptive action aimed at neutralising perceived security threats. The move has intensified Middle East tensions and reduced prospects for diplomatic progress on Iran’s nuclear programme.
The operation follows earlier hostilities between Israel and Iran, including a 12-day air conflict in June. Western officials have repeatedly warned that further escalation could destabilise the region.
Media reports indicated that explosions were heard in Tehran, while emergency sirens sounded in parts of Israel as authorities activated security protocols. Israeli officials imposed temporary restrictions on airspace and public movement, closing schools and non-essential workplaces.
