Geneva / Tehran — Web Desk: Iran has temporarily suspended its missile exercises in the strategic Strait of Hormuz, coinciding with the second round of nuclear negotiations with the United States in Geneva.
According to Iran’s semi-official news agency Tasnim, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) successfully launched multiple missiles from coastal areas, striking designated targets during ongoing drills.
This marks the first time Iran has formally closed parts of this crucial global waterway for military exercises amid rising U.S. military pressure. The Strait of Hormuz is a vital maritime passage through which roughly 20% of the world’s oil supply passes, meaning its closure can significantly affect international trade and oil tanker movements.
Iran stated the temporary suspension is a gesture of goodwill, coming as nuclear talks with the United States enter their second phase. U.S. forces have meanwhile deployed the aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford to the Middle East, joining the USS Abraham Lincoln, already stationed in the region.
The first round of talks between Washington and Tehran took place on February 6 in Oman, where the sides did not meet directly but held separate consultations with the Omani Foreign Minister, presenting their respective proposals and concerns.
Analysts say Iran’s suspension of exercises may signal a cautious diplomatic approach amid heightened tensions in the Gulf region.
