Maryam Nawaz Sets Three-Month Deadline for Punjab Police Reforms

Date:

Lahore, Pakistan – Web Desk: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has announced a sweeping police reform plan, setting a three-month deadline to improve accountability, transparency, and public service across the province.

Chairing a special review meeting, the chief minister approved key measures, including the introduction of an online FIR tracking system and mandatory audio and video recording of police investigations.

Under the plan, 14,000 body cameras will be deployed across Punjab, equipping 10 officers at each police station with the devices. Funds for the procurement of the cameras have also been approved.

To further enhance citizen safety, 700 panic buttons will be installed outside police stations, allowing immediate reporting of police misconduct. Maryam Nawaz directed police authorities to resolve minor public complaints within two to three hours, emphasizing that harassment complaints should be handled respectfully and transparently.

“If appreciation can be given publicly, punishment will also be given publicly,” she stated, reiterating zero tolerance for police misconduct. She also instructed the Punjab Police inspector general and senior officers to personally engage with citizens for feedback on police performance.

In addition to policing reforms, Maryam Nawaz ordered strict lane discipline enforcement in Lahore and other cities, and launched the Traffic Police One App and Safe City Monitoring App to enhance digital oversight and facilitate citizen services.

The comprehensive reform plan will be closely monitored to ensure full implementation within the three-month timeline.
