Afghanistan Crisis Sparks Regional Security Concerns, Neighbors Alert

Date:

Kabul / Web Desk: Rising instability in Afghanistan is increasingly becoming a regional security threat, with neighboring countries on high alert over escalating cross-border terrorism, drug trafficking, and human smuggling.

According to a recent report in the Eurasia Review, attacks and incursions by extremist groups from Afghanistan are becoming more frequent, impacting Pakistan, Iran, and Central Asian states. The report highlights that repeated border tensions have prompted countries like Tajikistan to strengthen surveillance and security along their frontiers.

Experts note that Afghanistan is no longer solely facing internal unrest; it has also become a hub for armed groups and cross-border criminal activity. UN estimates indicate that over 20 terrorist organizations operate in the country, with roughly 13,000 foreign fighters actively engaged.

“The presence of secure sanctuaries for extremist groups, combined with increasing narcotics and human trafficking, poses a growing challenge to regional peace and stability,” the report added. Analysts warn that these developments are not only heightening border security risks but also jeopardizing the broader security architecture of South and Central Asia.

Afghanistan’s lawlessness, compounded by the operational freedom of armed groups, is raising concerns among policymakers and security agencies in neighboring countries. Experts stress that coordinated regional efforts and international attention are required to mitigate threats stemming from insurgency, terrorism, and organized crime originating from Afghanistan.

The report underscores that unless addressed, these threats could escalate, further destabilizing an already fragile region and complicating diplomatic, security, and humanitarian initiatives across the area.
