Lahore, Pakistan — Web Desk: The third and final day of Basant celebrations is underway in Lahore, with kite enthusiasts expecting better wind conditions this afternoon after inconsistent winds spoiled the fun on the first day. Today is also a public holiday in the provincial capital as the three-day government-approved Basant festivities near their conclusion.
According to reports, nearly 56 hours have passed since Basant was officially revived after 25 years, with less than 16 hours remaining before the permitted celebration period ends. The Punjab government granted a 72-hour official window for Basant festivities.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) says Lahore is experiencing pleasant weather, with the current temperature at 12°C, a minimum of 11°C, and a maximum expected to reach 25°C. Wind speed currently stands at 8 km/h, which is considered insufficient for kite flying. Experts say ideal kite-flying conditions require wind speeds of 10 to 15 km/h. However, wind speeds are expected to increase to 12 km/h between 12 PM and 5 PM, offering favorable conditions for kite flying.
Basant enthusiasts enjoyed strong winds on the second day, while the first day’s celebrations were dampened due to weak winds. Authorities had to repeatedly block roads leading to Liberty Chowk using containers due to heavy crowds.
Security and monitoring are ongoing through Safe City cameras, thermal drones, and surveillance systems. More than 10,000 police personnel, around 2,500 traffic wardens, and 1,200 rescue officials are deployed on special Basant duty.
People have started gathering at Liberty Roundabout to view Basant-themed decorations, taking photos and videos with decorative kites as the festival atmosphere continues.
