CDA Denies WWI Memorial Demolition in Islamabad

Date:

Islamabad, Pakistan — Web Desk: The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has rejected reports claiming that a World War I memorial was demolished in Islamabad, clarifying that the monument was carefully relocated to ensure its preservation and public accessibility.

According to an official CDA statement, the memorial will be reinstalled near the Northern Bypass roundabout close to Rahara Village under CDA supervision. The authority stressed that the relocation was carried out using proper conservation protocols to protect the original bricks and materials.

CDA said the move was necessary due to structural deterioration over time and aimed at placing the memorial at a safer and more prominent public site. Although the monument was not on the notified heritage list, consultation was held with the Archaeology Department, and legal heirs provided a no-objection certificate before relocation.

The authority cited international examples of relocating heritage structures, including London Bridge and Marble Arch, to support its decision. CDA warned media outlets to verify facts before publication, calling misleading reports fake news.

The memorial honors Ghulam Ali’s bravery in World War I and his Military Cross award, CDA reaffirmed.
