Ukraine Conflict Claims Tens of Thousands of Soldiers as Talks for Ceasefire Continue
Kyiv, Ukraine – Web Desk: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has revealed that nearly 55,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed in the ongoing war with Russia, with many more reported missing. Speaking to a French TV channel, Zelensky said the casualties include both professional soldiers and conscripts, but he declined to provide exact figures for the missing troops.
This disclosure comes as the Russia-Ukraine conflict marks four years and crucial ceasefire talks are underway in Abu Dhabi under U.S. mediation. According to a Washington-based think tank, around 400,000 Ukrainian troops have been killed or injured since the start of the war.
The United Nations reports that in 2025 alone, over 2,500 Ukrainian civilians were killed and more than 12,000 injured due to Russian attacks—a significant increase from the previous year. Russian forces have also suffered heavy losses, with Ukrainian military leadership estimating around 420,000 Russian troops killed or injured in 2025. British defense intelligence estimates total Russian casualties since the war’s start exceed 1.1 million.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that Russia will continue the conflict until Ukraine makes decisions that could lead to peace. U.S. mediation efforts, including talks on territorial control, Donbas, and Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant, continue amid persistent differences between both sides. Currently, Russia occupies approximately 20% of Ukrainian territory, including Crimea and large parts of eastern Donbas.
