Deadly blaze in Kolkata warehouses exposes poor safety measures; rescue efforts continue

Kolkata, India – Web Desk: A massive fire engulfed two warehouses in Kolkata’s Anandpur area on 26 January, killing 21 workers and leaving 28 others missing. Rescue teams battled the inferno for over 36 hours, struggling to control the flames due to insufficient firefighting equipment and blocked emergency exits.

Officials reported that warehouse owners had sealed back doors to prevent theft, trapping workers inside. The tragedy has sparked outrage over poor safety standards under local authorities. One warehouse owner has been arrested, while the second promised INR 1 million compensation for each of the three confirmed deceased workers and to cover education costs for their children.

Investigations into the fire’s cause are ongoing. The incident highlights severe occupational hazards and the urgent need for regulatory enforcement to prevent further loss of life.
