Extreme cold and Arctic winds freeze Lake Michigan as US faces severe winter wave
Chicago, United States | Web Desk: The United States is experiencing an intense cold wave as Lake Michigan, one of North America’s five Great Lakes, has frozen over due to extreme Arctic winds and record-low temperatures.
Meteorologists confirm that this marks only the fourth time in US history that Lake Michigan has witnessed such large-scale ice coverage. While partial freezing occurs during harsh winters, complete or near-complete freezing remains extremely rare in global climate records.
The severe cold spell has also affected other major water bodies, including Lake Erie, where vast ice sheets have formed across the surface. Experts say the expansion of ice coverage reflects the intensity of the current Arctic air mass sweeping across the region.
Historically, Lake Michigan experienced similar freezing conditions during exceptionally cold years such as 1976, 1979, and 1994, but widespread ice formation on this scale has been reported only twice before.
Climate experts attribute the phenomenon to climate variability, noting that shifting weather patterns are causing more frequent extremes—ranging from record snowfall to unusually mild winters—across the Great Lakes region.
Authorities continue to monitor conditions as the cold wave disrupts daily life, transportation, and regional ecosystems.
